MICHELANGELO PISTOLETTO
Michelangelo Pistoletto was born in Biella in 1933. in 1960 he puts on his first exhibition in the Galleria Galatea in Turin. Between 1961 and 1962 he works on "Quadri Specchianti"(Mirror Paintings) that he later displayed in the Promotrice Gallery in Turin. This work involved the direct participation of the audience and introduces the active dimension of time in the paintings. Between 1965 and 1966 he produces a series of works called "Oggetti in meno" based on the principle of difference. This work led him to "Arte Povera", a movement started by the critic Germano Celant and recognised as one of the most important art movements of the 20th century. In the 70s he continues working on the theme of mirrors and develops it into works such as "Divisione-Moltiplicazione dello Specchio"(Division-Multiplication of the Mirror). In 1994 the artist presents his "Progetto Arte" manifesto; through an ethical and aesthetical effort he portrays art as a "responsible social transformation". In 2003 he is given the Leone d'Oro alla Carriera at the 50th Venice Biennale. In march 2004 he achieves the Laurea Honoris in Political Science from the Università di Torino. In 2007 he receives the Wolf Prize for science and art in Jerusalem.
